Suicide

If you are concerned that you or a friend is at risk for suicide, please call Student Counseling Services (SCS) at (309) 438-3655 and ask to speak to someone immediately. If it is after hours and you are in the Bloomington/Normal area please contact PATH at (309) 827-4005 or 1 (800) 570-7284 or by dialing 2-1-1. If you are not at Illinois State University, seek help at a local hospital emergency room, call a local crisis hotline or contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. At any time you may also reach out to the University Police at (309) 438-8631 who works closely with departments across the University and can activate additional resources.

Struggling with suicidal thoughts/feelings yourself

If you have been having suicidal thoughts, we urge you to call Student Counseling Services and talk with one of their counselors. Untreated depression is a major cause of suicidal thoughts. There are treatments that can help you feel much more hopeful about your situation. If you are not yet ready to take that step, confide in a trusted friend or family member, or check out one of the many resources available on the Student Counseling Services website.

If you are concerned about a friend or family member's suicide potential know that you can always call Student Counseling Services at (309) 438-3655 to consult about the situation. Their counselors will be happy to explore the circumstances with you and give you suggestions about what steps to take next.

Losing someone to suicide

Losing a friend or family member to suicide and the grief that comes with it can be a painful and shattering experience that is difficult to work through. Making an appointment with an SCS counselor about your loss might help you deal with the range of emotions you are feeling.
